2022 U.S. DISTANCE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Disc Golf Pro Tour released coverage of the 2022 U.S. Distance Championship yesterday.

Here’s a breakdown of the event:

  • OB lines both sides of the 200-foot-wide landing zone for throws

  • Each competitor gets 5 throws within a 3-minute time limit, the best of the 5 is used for scoring

  • Top 3 in the FPO division qualifier progress to the finals

  • Top 6 in the Open division qualifier progress to the finals

David Wiggins Jr. won the Open division with a throw of 698 feet, using an Innova Star Boss. The winning throw was logged at a speed of 78mph. David Wiggins also currently holds the World Distance Record at 1,108.9 feet.

Ella Hansen won the FPO division using the Discmania DD3. Her winning throw was 552 feet.

X-STEP FOR 700+

Of the players competing in the distance championship, Albert Tamm logged the furthest (non-OB) throw at 710 feet with a speed of 81mph.

tamm-710-throw-breakdown

While most competitors took to extreme run-ups and 360° spins to get all the distance they can, Albert went with the controlled x-step approach.

The most interesting things here happen after the full reach back.

  • As he plants his right leg, he drops his left knee and tucks his left arm close to his side

  • He keeps the chin tucked and his head down as he rotates on the heel of his plant foot

  • Plant, drop knee, tuck arm and chip, rotate

Next time you step up to the tee, don’t panic, just visualize Tamm’s x-step.

TOURNAMENT RECAP

Looking back to last week, there was a tournament we missed, the 2023 MX Disc Golf Championship in San Luis PotosÍ, Mexico.

Kevin Jones took 1st in the MPO division and Zoe AnDyke faced no competition to finish 1st in the FPO division.

The tournament had four professionals from Mexico compete and included a Pro Purse of $2,400.

GK Pro covered the three-round event with Luke Humphries and Kevin Jones commentating, see the coverage here.

RULE OF THE DAY

1. To save time. A player may declare a provisional throw any time:

a. The status of a disc cannot be readily determined because it may be lost, out-of-bounds, or have missed a mandatory; and,

b. The group agrees that a provisional throw may save time.

The thrower then continues play from whichever of the two throws is deemed by the group or an Official to have resulted in the correct lie.

Thanks for reading, until next time. Keep practicing those putts.
