ALL-STAR WEEKEND

The first events of the 2023 disc golf All-Star Weekend kick off at 3 pm EST today on the Disc Golf Network.

The press conference was held last night which helped build the hype for the event and for the 2023 season.

Ohn Scoggins commented on her offseason and how she’s looking to knock off the rust this weekend and potentially enjoy the nightlife Tucson has to offer.

Paul McBeth is ready to get the action started and is there to have a good time but as always, win. “I’m not too worried about the heads-up match that Rick and I are going to have at the end because I think we’re going to have it locked up before then.”

All-Star Weekend is an exhibition event that serves as the unofficial start to the 2023 Disc Golf Pro Tour. The top professionals from the previous season are split into teams and compete in a variety of competitions over the course of the weekend.

The competitions are made to test all aspects of their game, from putting to accuracy, and distance. Their general performance is also tested via doubles and singles stroke play. The team at the end of the weekend with the most points will be named the 2023 All-Star Champions.

THE PDGA GETS A NEW LOOK

The PDGA is starting this season off with a new brand, one that is “timeless” and ready to usher in the next era of disc golf.

The PDGA brand and disc golf have come a long way since “Steady” Ed Headrick first sent out an invitation with the words “Professional Disc Golf Association” to those who would later become the founding members of the PDGA.

Since 1997, the classic “throwing man” and PDGA letters have been the official logo.

The team tasked with exploring the future of the PDGA brand landed on four attributes that should be reflected in the new brand, authority, nature, community, and innovation.

After more than a year of research and planning, the PDGA finally landed on the brand they look to grow in the decades to come. They wanted to highlight a few critical aspects of the new logo.

  • The profile of a flying disc

  • The horizon of the earth

  • The dawn of a new day.

The new logo is designed to celebrate disc golf's past, highlight the sport, and showcase where disc golf is headed.

LATEST PLASTIC

The PDGA approved three new discs this past week.

  • Juggernaut from Innova Champion Discs

  • MD5 from Discmania

  • Feedback from Prodigy Discs

Total PDGA-approved models: 1,700

Gannon Buhr is competing in All-Star Weekend starting today, and since he announced his departure from Prodigy, he is now apparently walking around with a duffel full of unmarked discs. When his new sponsorship is announced, we’ll be on the lookout for new tour series discs with Gannon’s name on them.

CIRCLE’S EDGE

  • The PDGA released updates to two of their policies, CBD Product Use and Sponsorship & Advertising. The update on CBD builds upon the policy established three years ago.

  • The 2024 Champions Cup invitation criteria were announced. The invite criteria include the addition of three international events, more Euro Tour events, as well as MP40 and FP40 Masters World Champions.

  • 13-year-old Wyat Mahoney is now the youngest player to win a B-Tier tournament in the MPO division. This marks his second win and eighth top-3 finish as an MPO. He is rated 976 and has 45 career wins.

RULE OF THE DAY

E. If the position of the thrown disc is in-bounds and within one meter of an out-of-bounds line, the lie may be relocated to a new lie at any point on a one meter line that extends perpendicularly from that point on the out-of-bounds line and passes through the thrown disc. Alternatively, when the thrown disc is within one meter of a corner, the lie may be relocated on a one meter line that extends from that corner through the thrown disc.
